The Gameplay
Typically, the game of Chinese Poker is played with 4 players, although 2 or 3 players can also play the game.
Playing a poker hand
In Chinese poker, the game is played with a deck of 52 cards and every player receives a hand of 13 playing cards. Then it is required to divide a hand of 13 cards into 3 hands by each player which is known as ‘setting’.
Out of the three hands, the two hands called ‘the middle’ and ‘the back’ containing 5 playing cards in each hand, whereas one called ‘the front’ containing 3 playing cards. The back is counted as the hand f highest ranking and the front is counted as the hand of lowest ranking. It must be noted that the flushes and the straights does not counted in the hand of 3 playing cards.
The back hand has to be placed facing down before the player, the middle hand has to be placed facing down before the back hand and the front hand has to be placed facing down before the middle hand. After the setting of hands by all the players, an announcement has to be made by every player in his turn in the clockwise direction; beginning from the dealer’s left in concern with the playing of his hand. Prior to revealing the hands of all players, players tend to announce their royalties.
Payouts- Scoring in the game
Units is the term used for the stakes played in Chinese poker; consisting of an amount of money is agreed on before the starting of the game. It is dictated by the rules of basic scoring that a single unit is collected by every player whose corresponding hand beats his own back, middle and front hand. Thus, different from other games of poker, to win money being the second-best player at the gambling table is a good thing.
There are some variants where an additional unit is paid to the players who are winning in 2 or 3 of the poker hands. But in other variants, an additional unit is paid to the players only when they have won all the 3 hands called as a ‘scoop’. Also, because of the confronting nature of all the players towards comparing each other, different players are allowed to play possibly for different stakes. For an instance, A and B could be playing for the amount of $10 per unit, whereas other player playing for $1 per unit. Commonly, several variations are there which are used for scoring in the game. The method of 2-4 scoring and 1-6 scoring are the most commonly used systems for the purpose o scoring in the casinos now-a-days.
A player receives one unit for all of the three hands he wins in the method of 2-4 scoring, and 1 unit is known as the overall unit which is awarded to the player winning 2 out of the 3 hands or all the three hands. If there exist a situation of tie in any of the hands, then there will be exchanged no money for such hand either both of the other hands are won and 3 units are collected by him, including 1 unit for all the 3 hands and 1 for overall, or one hand is one by each player in exchange of no units, including I unit won by each player and no overall is there.
In a method of 1-6 scoring, a player receives I unit for all the three hands he wins, and 3 units in bonus which is over the 3 hands, if he wins all the 3 hands.

In the method of 2-4 scoring, 2 points are paid by Robb to Michael. But in method of 1-6 scoring, 1 point is paid by Robb to Michael.
Royalties
Some extra units are awarded to the players particularly with some b hands in the form of royalties and bonuses. In some variant, the value of the royalties are of the similar amounts like 1 unit is paid for every royalty. In some other versions of the game, different payouts are there for each royalty like in the back 1 unit is paid for a four of a kind and 2 units are paid for a straight flush. Sometimes, the royalty is only awarded to the player winning the particular hand like in the back four sixes are beaten by four sevens, thus the royalty is awarded to the player having sevens.
In some of the games of Chinese poker, breaking up of the four of a kinds or straight flushes are allowed for the players and still they can have royalties. For example; if a player is dealing with four seven cards; in the front, he might be using 3 of the four sevens, and in the middle, 1 as a part of a straight. In some of the rules, players are only permitted for claiming one royalty for a single hand.
The royalties have to be declared previous to the disclosing of the hands. There listed some of the hands as well as the different combinations of hands on which the royalties are awarded most commonly:
- 4 of a kind
- Straight flush
- In the front, 3 of a kind
- In the middle, full house or better
If a player is dealing with any special type of royalty called ‘natural’, he will be rewarded immediately, before anyone surrenders, and no hand is set by the player that includes:
- 3 flushes
- 3 straights
- 6 pairs that counts all 3 hands
- 13 cards those must be unique including A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
Surrendering
A greater amount of money will be paid in comparison to the money paid when 2 hands are lost out of the 3 hands by the player when he is surrendering his hand, but the lesser amount will be paid he get scooped or lost all of his three hands. No amount is required to be paid by the player to his opponents if he had surrendered. But in some variants of the game, the option of surrendering is not available.
Hands that are mis-set:
If a hand of the player is mis-set by him i.e. in the front he placed 3 of a kind, but in the middle only 2 pair, then he has to pay an amount equal to the amount paid when he get scooped to those players who have not surrendered yet and still in the hand. In some variants, this is required for the players for playing their hands.
Where to play
In the big tournaments of poker, most often Chinese poker is treated by the players as a side game, most particularly at the tournament of WSOP. Typically, the stakes are 25 dollars, 50 dollars and 100 dollars each unit. Some players are those who plays for the high stakes up to a limit of 500 dollars or 1000 dollars each unit. When there are no player having Texas holdem, Omaha holdem or full stud, usually there played the game of Chinese poker.
Recently, the Wynn and the Bellagio casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada are well-known for spreading of the game of Chinese poker.
Variations
- Low, in the middle – The middle hand is to be played as a low hand called Deuce-to-seven in this variation of the game.
- Criss-cross – Criss-cross variation is played heading up: each player has to deal with 2 hands of 13 cards and have to play each of his hands against each of the hand of his opponent. The hands of the player will be treated as 2 hands that are independent; they are not allowed to exchange cards involving the 2 hands.
- The Wheel including 5, 4, 3, 2, and A, which can be called as a 2nd highest straight in this variation. Thus, the hand ranked above a straight including K, Q, J, 10, and 9, but below a straight including A, K, Q, J, and 10.
