Poker

Poker refers to a game of cards in which betting rules are applied. The game also often shares hand ranking. The game varies far and wide depending on a number of factors. The factors include how the cards are dealt, the ways in which hands may be formed, which hand wins the pot in a showdown, bet limits and rounds of betting.

In majority of modern poker games, the first round of betting starts with some sort of forced bet. After that each player in turn has to either match the maximum previous bet or fold. When a player folds, then he or she loses all further interest in the hand. A player who is able to match a bet may rise and increase the bet. When all players have either matched the last bet or folded, the betting round comes to an end. If all but one player fold on any round, the other player grabs the pot and do not show his or her cards. If more than one player can match the bet after the final betting round, they show their hands and the winning hand takes the pot.

According to many players the betting system distinguishes the game of poker from the gambling games. Theoretically, a person can voluntarily place money on the pot only if he or she thinks the bet has positive expected value. So while chance is the determining factor in any particular hand, the long-term expectations of the players can be determined by their actions based on probability and thought process.

Poker Variations

The game of Poker has a number of varieties. All of these varieties follow a similar of play pattern and using the same hand ranking hierarchy. Depending on the protocol of card-dealing and betting, poker can be divided into three families.

  • Straight – This is the oldest poker family. In this game, a complete hand is given to each player and they bet in one round. Raising and re-raising is allowed in this family of poker. Primero, a card game that later evolved into the gentleman’s game of three-card brag was the root of this game of poker. Three-card brag was popular in the US during American Revolutionary War and is still popular in the UK. Though straight uses five cards in the final showdown, poker nowadays is played in a complex form that allows room for additional strategy.

  • Stud – It is the second oldest poker family. In this, cards are played in a pre-arranged combination of rounds or streets. The rounds include face up rounds and face down rounds. In this game one round of betting follows another. In this game, one card is dealt at a time and betting is done on them. The popular variety of stud is 7 card studs, in which four cards are face down and four are face up.

  • Draw – In this variation, a player deals with a complete hand of face down cards. After betting, the players can change the unwanted cards and start dealing again. The most famous variation in this family is 5 card draw.

  • Community – It is a well known variation of the stud family. In this, the players deal with incomplete hands and use facedown cards. There is certain face up community cards at the center of the table. Each of these cards can be used by the players to make a five card had. The popular games of this family are Texas Hold'em Poker and Omaha.

There are some other games, which use the hand ranking method. These games are also referred to as poker. Video poker is a single player game in computer. "Acey-Deucey" or "Red Dog" Poker is another game that bears the name of poker. However, the mode of play of this game is more similar to Blackjack and not that of poker.

Game play

In a game of poker, the right to deal a hand rotates among the players. The right to deal is marked by a deal button or buck. In a casino, the house dealer deals with the hands, but the right to deal or the dealer button is given to the players in clockwise order to determine a dealer to determine the betting order.

Forced bets are generally an ante or a blind bet. It takes one or more player to make forced bets. In this bet, the player deals with the appropriate number of cards and uses one at a time. The rules of the game depend of the family of poker being played. After the primary deal the rounds of betting starts. Between each betting, the players develop their hands by using additional cards or by exchanging unwanted cards. All the bets are gathered in the pot after betting is over.

In a game, where a player bet and no one makes call then the bet is folded and the bettor takes the pot without showing the cards. But if there is more than one player to match the bet then they have to show hands and the winning hand takes the pot. The hand showing event is called a showdown.
