Roulette Betting
The beauty of roulette is the variety of bets that can be placed for any one spin of the wheel. There are two types of bets – inside and outside – and no limit to the number or type of bets placed at any one play.
An inside bet refers to a bet on any of the numbers (or combination available from the layout such as corners, trios or streets etc) within the wheel.
An outside bet refers to the layout position – colors, odd or even, columns, dozens (or thirds), 1-18/19-36 (halves).
Payouts for the bets are based on their probability, so the ‘odds’ reflect probable chance of that occurrence happening. With there being only one green pocket on the wheel and eighteen each of red and black, it is highly unlikely, according to the laws of probability, that green would be where the ball would land. It is much more likely to land on either a red or a black number.
There are rules imposed to the maximum and minimum bets permitted at the roulette table – house limits – for inside and outside bets separately, at each spin. To be able to differentiate between players at a table, some casinos use an array of different colored table chips for inside bets. Betting continues at the table until the croupier calls ‘no more bets’ after which no more chips will be accepted on the table.
Roulette etiquette is quite strict and when the spin is over and the winning number, covered by the ball in the pocket, is revealed, a marker is placed on the number on the table layout by the croupier. No player is permitted to place, collect or remove any bets from the table once the marker has been placed. The croupier will rake away the losing bets from the table and ascertain the values of those inside and outside bets that have won. Payouts are then made and after removing the marker from the table players are invited ‘mesdames et messieurs, place your bets’ and the process continues as before with new bets placed for the new spin of the roulette wheel.
